Environmental Education Package
The package of Environmental Education "Approaching the natural environment of Parnonas" was created in the implementation of the Project "Elaboration and implementation of environmental awareness and information of local people to protect mount Parnonas from the fires" under Measure: "Protection, upgrade and enhancement of forest ecosystems and natural beauty" of PEP Peloponnesus. It was implemented by the Hellenic Ornithological Society and Development Company Parnonas.
This material of environmental education is concentrated in an envelope, addressed to teachers and pupils (of the last classes of primary and high school) who want to engage with the natural environment of the beautiful and very important area of the "Ecological park of Mount Parnon - Moustos wetland". Particular emphasis is given both in research and activities that derive pleasure from the tour in the region. The main purpose is for the children to love the Park and learn to "take care" of it.
General Objectives are:
- To encourage children to ponder in the countryside of the mountain and the wetland of Mousto with a sense of curiosity for the secrets of nature.
- The acquaintance of children with special characteristics of the natural environment of the Ecological Park. In particular, to be able to recognize the most typical species of flora and fauna which encounter in the countryside of the Park and be able to calculate basic parameters that characterize the growth of plants.
- Children could record and analyze data that characterize the relationship of humans to the environment of the mountains.
It contains an electronic presentation, an auxiliary guide for the teacher and a series of sheet-activities.
The electronic presentation is recommended prior to the visit to the region. The same should be done with the first part of the activities ( "Sheet-activities in the classroom") in order to familiarize children with the characteristics of certain organisms (such as aquatic birds). Thus, it will be a more effective tour in the region that can focus on the most striking observation of living organisms.
For the activities it is not necessary to have laboratory equipment except for photocopies of the elementary sheet-activities or devices (such as corrective contact lenses, pencils, rope).
The activities revolve around three main levels:
A. Classroom: aim to prepare students.
B. Study: outdoor activities mainly aiming at recognizing the special characteristics of the natural environment of the region.
C. Entertainment: (Not fun!) Outdoor activities that aim to draw pleasure from the approach of nature.
