The project LIFE+ NATURE LIFE07 NAT/GR/000286 entitled "Restoration of Pinus nigra forests on Mount Parnonas (GR2520006) through a structured approach" is implemented by the Goulandris Natural History Museum/Greek Biotope - Wetland Centre in cooperation with the Region of Peloponnese, the Region of Eastern Macedonia - Thrace and the Management Body of Mount Parnonas and Moustos Wetland. The project started in January 2009 and is expected to be completed in June 2013. The project budget amounts to EUR 3,035,791.00, of which EUR 2,270,468.09 (74.79%) is an EU funding. The project is co-funded by the General Directorate for the Development and Protection of Forests and Natural Environment - Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Climate Change.
The black pine forests in Parnonas have been severely damaged by the extensive forest fires of 2007. The project LIFE+ "Restoration of Pinus nigra forests on Mount Parnonas (GR2520006) through a structured approach" aims at:
A. The demonstration of the application of a structured approach to restore burnt areas of the priority habitat type "(Sub-) Mediterranean pine forests with endemic black pines".
B. The restoration of 290 ha of the priority habitat type 9530 "(Sub-) Mediterranean pine forests with endemic black pines" in the Site of Community Importance (SCI) GR2520006 "Oros Parnonas (and Malevi area)".
The Management Body of Parnonas is participating in this project as the responsible for the Dissemination and communication actions. The purpose of the dissemination and communication of the project's results (e.g. website, participation in conferences, layman's report) is to promote the approach and the restoration actions implemented under this project. Particularly noted here is the holding of a conference about the restoration of forests, the publication of guidelines concerning the implementation of a structured approach for the restoration of black pine forests and their circulation to the authorities responsible for forest restoration.
